Beauty in Contrast

Hello everyone! I feel that there has been some really cool information that I have noticed in the past few weeks of learning and I wanted to share some of those things with you.   I have been learning a lot this week about families and how family members work together to create a specific family unit. All families are different and I really believe that is a beautiful thing. Diversity and variations in this life are necessary for us to understand and appreciate the things that we love. Even with the understanding that I have of the importance of contrast in life, I still find things that are abnormal or different to be challenging for me to accept. For example, I have just learned about how each family has its own culture. Culture is the traditions, values, and beliefs that a group of people has that have been passed on for generations. Individual families have their own culture and this is something that I had never realized before now. The culture that my family has i...

Family Systems

Hello everyone! Whether I mean to or not, I catch myself observing families and how members interact with one another. I watch my own family as well but I do love learning about how other people's families work together and show their love for one another. It's intriguing because most of the time there are differences between what I experienced growing up with my family and how other families show their love. Those differences usually aren't a bad thing, but I guess it makes sense when I don't understand when other families work differently than mine. Family is based on the word "familiar", so when there are families that are different from mine, it just is not familiar to me.  It seems like in families, each person plays a role. Some roles may be the troublemaker, the peacemaker, the rock, or the decision-maker. There are so many roles that are created in families to fulfill the needs that family members feel are necessary. Often those roles are not vocally ...

Thoughtful decisions

Hello everyone, I hope you have had a wonderful week! This week has been full of new learning experiences. I wanted to share some of the things I've learned because maybe you are like me and had never heard about a few of these things.  In 2013, there was a law passed which redefined the definition of marriage. Up to that point marriage had been defined as being between a man and a women. Now after the Supreme Court hearings, marriage is accepted to be legal between same-sex individuals as well. We learned in class about the process of getting to the point where the Supreme Court passed this law. There were multiple briefs that were brought up to help sway the opinions of Justice Kennedy. Justice Kennedy had been holding out on passing the laws because of his concern with how this would effect the children who come from the families of a same-sex marriage. The APA (American Phycological Association) created one of the briefs that collected a large amount of data and studies i...

This is me!

Hello everyone, my name's Riley!        A few things about me that I want you to know:  I love my family and friends so much and enjoy spending time with them. I love setting goals for myself which help me to stay more motivated even through hard or monotonous times.  I love playing sports (pickleball and spikeball are my favorites right now) and hiking. Also, my favorite food is pizza and I would eat it every day if I could. I love to learn! I especially have found that learning about the human body and how it works really fascinates me. I have been working toward my bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology which has helped me to learn a lot about our body's capabilities and how to teach and help others learn about their body's potential. I also just finished an associate of science degree in the Physical Therapist Assistant program. I hope to start working as a Physical Therapist Assistant soon! My goal is to take what I've learned in all my cl...
